Richard Lander held its annual FutureChef competition, for year 10 catering students, on Tuesday 23rd October.
The competition was larger than last year and the standard of food was excellent. Five students took part all having to produce a hot main course in one hour. The students were all being judged on their workmanship, levels of skill, hygiene, presentation and most importantly flavour. The atmosphere in room 219, where the competition was held, was very relaxed but it was obvious that the students were feeling the pressure as they tried to all produce perfect looking and tasting food. Some of the five dishes cooked included, wrapped chicken served with a fresh salsa and tagliatelle made by Will Snapes. Conchiglie served with sausage, pepper and chilli in a tomato sauce by Chelsea Snell. Chicken wrapped in bacon served with honey glazed carrots and potato dauphinoise by Billy Bromley. All three were outstanding but first and second just pipped them.
In second place, Lennon Lewis made a lovely Spanish style dish with chicken, chorizo, peppers and potatoes. The dish had wonderful flavours and looked lovely. The overall winner, Jasmine Bennetts made a simple but perfectly cooked dish of seasonal vegetables, potatoes and chicken wrapped in bacon and served with a tomato and onion sauce. She showed real skill with her cooking and made her dish shine with lovely textures and flavours.
All five students received prizes for their efforts and now Jasmine will go on to represent the school at Cornwall College in the local final. Good luck Jasmine.
