U12 West Cornwall Rugby Tournament
Last Friday Richard Lander School hosted the annual U12 West Cornwall Rugby Tournament. This involved 12 Secondary Schools bringing their Year 7 teams to our school and taking part in a 13 ‘a’side Rugby tournament. In the morning there were a series of group games with the top teams qualifying for the knockout stages in the afternoon. The standard of Rugby was excellent throughout the day and it was great to see so many young people enjoying taking part in the sport.
RLS entered 2 teams into the tournament, with 32 students representing the school. All these students performed really well throughout the day and showed considerable improvement as the day went on.
The ‘A’ team played some of their best Rugby of the year. They ran out winners in the group stages, beating Penryn College 21-0, Camborne 7-0 and Hayle 7-0. In the Quarter finals they met Mounts Bay and ran out narrow winners by
one try to nil meaning they would meet Redruth School in the semi-finals. Early that week the team had been soundly beaten by Redruth 45 -7 but this game was totally different. The RLS team matched Redruth and for the most part dominated the game. Sadly in the final play of the game Redruth scored a breakaway try giving them a 7 nil victory. Although this result was tough on our players they should be very proud of their efforts throughout the day and should not be downhearted at losing to an excellent Redruth side.
The tournament was eventually won by Truro School and congratulations to them for retaining this title for the 3rd year running. Can I once again congratulate the Year 7 students who took and to the Year 9 students who assisted in the running of the day.
