The year 8 drama club stepped out on the professional stage last week as they performed in the Secondary Schools Drama Showcase at the Hall for Cornwall. Richard Lander School takes part in the showcase every year and this year we were given the poems of Charles Causley as our theme.
The Cornish poet was born in Launceston and served in the Royal Navy and also worked as a teacher. He is famous for his ballads based on Cornish folk and local legends. We took “The Seasons in North Cornwall” for our inspiration. Each scene was devised by the students and it really was a very creative process. The girls read the poem then reflected on growing up in Cornwall. They then improvised ideas around what each new season meant to them. This included the long queues for ice cream when the tourists invade or the waiting for the school closure report on the radio when it snows! Our performance also included the voice of BBC Cornwall’s weatherman Kevin Thomas. We are very grateful to him for his wonderful reading of the poem and his very special weather reports.
Well done girls your performance was very warmly received by the audience and your professionalism shone out!
