Accelerated Reading Champions - Spring 2013!

All RLS Year 7 are now on the Accelerated Reading Programme and several of our students were rewarded for their efforts so far in our ARP Prize Assembly last Friday , 8th March. The atmosphere in the main hall was brilliant again, very enthusiastic with students clapping and cheering the prize winners.

Best Class

Mr Rowe’s class (7R3) achieved the most words read, eight and a half million, beating Ms Barratt’s class (7R2) into very creditable second place. 7L1 were in third place. Who will be in first place next time? Can any other group take Mr Rowe’s crown?

New Millionaires and a DOUBLE!

Two new millionaires received book tokens from Mr Mulcahy - Lauren Counter who has reached the target and Josephine Cowley who has read nearly 1.8 million words. Josephine recommended ‘Itch’ by Simon Mayo as a great read. Extra congratulations go to Finn Howard who becomes our first double millionaire! A fantastic effort from Finn, who recommended ‘The Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’ which Mr Mulcahy read at a much older age and which also happens to be Ms Hughes’ favourite book ever as well – great taste, Finn.

World Book Day Tokens and Book Fair

Mr Rose, our librarian reminded students to use their £1 World Book Day tokens. They can either be redeemed in the library for a free quick book or used against the purchase of a more expensive title. Many new books are available to buy / order at the Book Fair which Mr Rose is currently running in the library. Check it out! Tokens can also be used in local book shops such as WHSmiths or Waterstones.

Kindle Prize Draw

Tension mounted in the main hall as the prize draw was made by Mr Tointon,  from the science department, for the Kindle ereader. The lucky name pulled from the hat was Hector Faux, who looked really pleased with his good fortune. Hector is a very deserving winner, having read almost two million words on the ARP Programme. His win was cheered all round by his peers. Hector accepted his prize from the Head teacher and told the audience about one of the books that he has recently enjoyed which involved wizards and magic.

It Could Be You...

The next Kindle prize draw – of names of students who have successfully completed quizzes - takes place after Easter. So… get your holiday reading from the library (you can take out three books but speak to Mr Rose if you want to take more) and then get quizzing. Every completed quiz equals your name in the hat. You’ve got to be in it to win it! Good luck for next time and keep reading.

7R3 – Read All About Them

It was with great enthusiasm 7R3 were crowned reigning champions of the all-important ‘Most Words Read’ category during the recent Accelerated Reading Assembly.
The class have read a whopping 8.5 million words (an average of an amazing 354,166 words per student)!  They took their title with a smile and all agree library lessons are a great time to engage in taking quizzes and reading.
When asked about this achievement Roberto Mancini said: “It is an incredible achievement, to win back-to-back titles is something I would love to be able to achieve”.

Warning to all classes…we’re not on strike just yet and are extremely determined to bag our hat-trick.  Bring on the next assembly!
