Report by Zak Minett—Year 8
''All the cakes are amazing'' said Henry Nicholson, year 8, as the final round of the Richard Lander School, Children In Need Bake Off commenced. Competitors had been tasked with creating a 'showstopper' cake, the theme of which was … Pudsey of course!
Each contestant showed off their baking skills, creating marvellous designs and flavours, from banana cake to chocolate orange, caramel to a classic Victoria Sponge, and many more. The event was the last of three bake off rounds, which have taken place over the last 2 weeks, in which both teachers and students entered to raise money for Children In Need. As before, during lunchtime, pupils and teachers paid 50p to charity, in return for being allowed to sample 3 different cakes of their choosing, before voting for the favourite.
This round raised over £50 for Children in Need and this week’s winners came in as Zak Minett in 3rd place with a two tier banana cake, iced to look like a Pudsey bear, in 2nd place, Daisy Barton with her rich, Smartie topped chocolate squares and finally, in first place was Rebecca Stratton, with her Pudsey cake which featured 4 layers of sponge which alternated between vanilla and chocolate flavour. However, everyone was given a prize for taking part.
The 3 Bake Off events were a sure success and raised £163 that will go to helping less fortunate kids than ourselves around the world. It's safe to say a lot of time and effort was put into each and every cake, biscuit and muffin and we extend a huge thank you to all the bakers, Miss Ritchie, the organiser of the event, and finally the student and teacher judges. Well done to you all!
