On Wednesday 13th November, the school Jazz Band and Recorder Group played to 5500 people during the Last Night of the Schools Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. They were among 640 students who travelled from Cornwall to perform a piece specially written for the occasion by Joe Broughton, working with Music for Youth. The piece has 5 sections and captures the spirit of Cornwall, opening with a dramatic movement which portrays the dark stormy side of the sea and then moving on to the second section, “Fisherman’s Prayer” which saw the Richard Lander School Recorder Group – 8 students and their teacher Mrs Whomersley – playing on their own, in a floodlit box above the audience and the stage at the Royal Albert Hall!
For Jazz Band members, this occasion offered the opportunity to play in a huge orchestra in a world class venue. For instance, our solo Euphonium player played with 19 others!
This wonderful performance delighted the audience and was "the most amazing" experience for the staff and students involved. A DVD will be made of the occasion.
