RLR1 secured a 23rd and 25th place out of 80 cars running which is a solid performance given her 5 year old design (over 200 cars entered this year). Newer designs occupied 20 of the places in front of us and none of them are really pushing the green building concept that has won so many awards for RLR1 in previous years. It was telling that there was no longer a materials award for the construction of the car, and many front runners are embracing carbon fibre technology.
Race 1 produced the 23rd place. RLR1 was fractionally over geared which gave a very slow last lap. The gearing was changed down for Race 2 but an unexplained stop lasting over 4 minutes on track cost a potential place in the teens – we dropped to 46th before recovering to 25th. Race 2 also became very wet as the forecasted bad weather rolled in. We witnessed over 10 cars pirouette on the final corner (Penair claimed a 1080 triple!). With the forecast set to worsen, race 2 was shortened by 7 minutes which was irritating as we were rapidly climbing places towards the end. The RLR team worked really well together to manage the race in increasingly challenging circumstances.
RLRK had a good run in race 1 securing 3rd best kit car, but race 2 was not as rewarding, however the car is providing many more driving opportunities and in particular allowing younger students to learn the team work needed to be successful in a Greenpower race.
The new car is now underway with the body shell mold already under construction. The intention is that RLR3 will be our top level car for KS4 and also KS5 with a college link planned so that we can race in F24+ which is the 16-25 year old category. The current winner of F24+ has just secured an internship with Red Bull Racing.
A huge thanks to all parents, teachers, supporters and of course students for another successful year of Greenpower Racing!
Remember application forms for the 2014-15 race season can be picked up in school. We will need in particular those students with a head for organisation and team managment, not just drivers! Deadline for applications is the 24th October.
