Report by Nesta Griffith - Year 8
Tuesday 16th October was an exciting day for all the schools that played in the Under 16 Girls County Hockey tournament. Richard Lander co-hosted the tournament with Penair.
Lander got off to an amazing start in the group matches beating Penrice 5-0 and Liskeard 5 -1. However in our third match we came up against a very worthy competitor who pushed us back into our own defensive half for most of the game and despite our best efforts we lost 2-0. But Lander spirit can never be broken and we pushed through in the next match where confidence was restored with a spectacular win against Poltair 9-0, which set us up nicely for a show down with Truro School to clinch the last qualifying spot. Truro school were the front runners for the tournament until we came in and scored in the first minute and after that we were not looking back! Group stage goal scorers were Jen Stidwill with 8, pictured right, Georgia Doyle-Lay with 6, Hannah Smith with 4 and Eloise Ireland.
As we had qualified, we took the journey to Penair to play in a semi-final against Penryn College. Unfortunately in this match we didn’t have much luck. We dominated the game with superior possession and won 2 short corners, however no goals were scored. Then it was the dreaded penalty flicks. Hannah Smith and Amy Fielding got us off to a great start, converting their flicks to give us a chance of winning, but then the goalkeeper from Penryn College, rescuing the match at all costs, did the splits to save the goal. We lost with a frustrating 3-2 score line but were still proud of the way our team played.
