Studying the Civil War at the Cornwall Records Office

Added 3 yearss ago

On the 10th October a small group of year 8's attended a workshop about the Civil War in Cornwall at Cornwall Records Office. The students were, Molly Short, Zena Baulk, Maddy Harris, Jessica Georgelin, Joe Barnes, Nico Roskilly-Pugliese and Noah Palfreyman-Gaze. The aim of the afternoon was to show students how we find out about the past by using real documents. The first part of the session included a guided tour of Cornwall Record Office's strong room, which holds all the birth, marriage and death certificates for Cornwall, diaries, maps, deeds, the list is endless. Without this vital resource we wouldn't know so much about this county.

The second part of the day consisted of the group using role play to bring alive the documents which told the story of Cornwall in the Civil War. Finally the students used the documents to investigate the impact of the war on the lives of Cornish people. These students will be leading the same workshop with their History groups in school.
