On Wednesday 4th February, fifteen Year 8 students went with 30 Year 3’s from St.Agnes School to conduct a beach survey along the strandline at Porthtowan. Along with Mr Crawley & Mrs Llewellyn, there was an introductory presentation at St.Agnes, where we looked at previous finds & discovered how the Gulf Stream brings so much to our shores.
There were great finds, including a huge roller from a trawler (later collected by the Coastguards), lobster tags and plastic bottles from Spain. The weather was also fantastic, so we were able to have our lunch sitting on the sand! The Beach Café very kindly provided us with hot chocolates too.
The students said - ‘I was really interested to see what ends up on our beaches’
‘It was a great experience and it showed how even younger children care about our seas and beaches’
‘I was really pleased to find my tag & discovered it was from a shipping company based in Spain and Norway.’
