Congratulations to the students who have been taking part in the National Art and Design Saturday Clubs at Truro College and Cornwall College this term. The Cornwall College Art Club is run by Mrs McGregor, our Creative Arts Technician, and she has provided a report on their trip to London last weekend.
On Saturday 6th June, I took 4 Richard Lander students - Caitlin Marshall, Quyen Jacobson, Imi Sparkes and Evie Dinsdale - to London, as part of a group of students from 7 other local secondary schools who attend my Cornwall College Saturday Club. We were exhibiting work at Somerset House on the Thames, with 41 other colleges who run National Art and Design Saturday Clubs. We were invited to a private view and met other students from around the country, including the Truro College Club who had 3 Richard Lander School students who had travelled up with them; Erykah Allen, Joe Wilkes and Danielle Stokes.
Other RLS students who have taken part in the club but who were unable to come on the London trip were Tia Catt, Dulcie Havers and Caitlin Moors.
As part of our private view, students took part in an award ceremony, they were called up onto a stage to shake hands with Sir John and Frances Sorrell, who have set up the Sorrell Foundation to inspire this young generation to gain skills that might lead to employment in the Creative Industries. They were presented with a certificate and a year book which can be viewed in the Creative Arts Base.
We spent the rest day walking along the river seeing London, eating on Bankside and spending the evening in the Tate Modern
The Art Club students are also exhibiting at Cornwall College Camborne, Floor 5 of Tamar Towerblock. The exhibition opens tonight, students will be their between 6 and 7pm. You can also visit on Monday to Friday next week from 10am until 4pm.
National Art and Design Clubs are completely free of charge and involve a years programme of inspiring Saturday morning workshops, including a masterclass with a professional artist or design company, and end with a trip to London! We understand they will be running again in the Autumn term so watch this space for more information or visit the Creative Arts Base and ask for Mrs McGregor on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.
