On Tuesday 30th June, Richard Lander School’s annual Sports Day took place. This is the culmination of learning community sports competitions which take place over the academic year and for many students a highlight of their school year. The results from these previous competitions had put Pentire into the lead with 172.5 points, followed by Rame with 165, Godrevy with 155.5, and Towan with 154 but there are a huge amount of points to be won at Sports Day so the Learning Community Cup was very much ‘for the taking’ for all 4 communities.
Glorious sunshine lead to high spirits and an atmosphere of serious competitiveness combined with good sportsmanship, leading the man with the megaphone, Mr Holloway, to describe it as his best sports day ever.
With 4 year groups competing in 12 different track and field events, the PE department, supported by other RLS staff, had a mammoth organisational task but everything ran very smoothly.
Students who were not selected for ‘point scoring’ events still had the opportunity to enjoy competitive sport as areas of the sports filed were set aside for volleyball, football, soft tennis and tug-of-war which were open to all. Mrs Vincent, Head of Maths, organised an Ice Cream Stall which raised over £200 for Shelterbox and students from the Ark held there own sports day with events such as hurdles and target practice.
On the day an astounding 28 RLS records were broken which included the following.

This years deserving winners were TOWAN!
