Students find teaching ‘not as easy as it looks’ on World Book Day

Added 2 weeks ago

On Wednesday 1st March, Richard Lander School celebrated World Book Day with role reversal and creative costumes when all of Year 7 came into school dressed as storybook characters to participate in workshops which were delivered by their Year 9 peers. Students were invited to come up with prequels or sequels to fairy tales, to develop characters inspired by random objects, to take part in a World Book Day quiz or to portray well-known tales in the form of mime or song.
After 4 hours of delivering lessons, Year 9 student, Emily said “Our workshop involved Year 7s re-enacting classic fairy tales in the personalities of the characters they had come dressed up as. I found teaching quite exhausting but equally as fun, rewarding and inspiring.”
Robin added ‘I’ve enjoyed World Book Day but I’ve learned that teaching is not as easy as it looks!’

Lead teacher, Hannah Taylor, who was dressed as the Cheshire Cat said ‘Thank you to Year 9 for the excellent workshops and to all the students for the effort they have made with their fantastic costumes, I am actually smiling from ear to ear, it’s not just my make up! I hope everyone had an amazing day.’

The day finished with a fantastic performance by The Story Republic. Year 7 student, Aisling Cook, recently won the Gold Award in the Cornwall Young Author competition and her winning story; ‘Rescuing Dennis’, was brought to life along with other winning entries by actors Connie Crosby and Keith Sparrow. Aisling was presented with an anthology which includes her own story along with a signed copy of head judge and author, Liz Kessler’s, book. Other Richard Lander School students who made the long list and have also had their work published in the anthology are Tilly Green, Willow Jeffery, Zita Hinshelwood and Jess Brotherton.  Well done to you all!
A team of Year 9 media leaders took photos all day and made a short film about World Book day which was shown on the day and will be uploaded to the school website soon
