The Lander4Uganda 2020 team have begun their fundraising in earnest! Just 3 months into their fundraising journey and they have already hosted a Halloween Sleepover, which raised over £4000, packed bags of shopping in Tesco Redruth, sold uniform, coffee, doughnuts, smoothies and African crafts at various school events and been busily making Christmas crafts with Mrs Downing after school on a Wednesday night.
There have been some remarkable individual contributions too. Year 8 student, Izzy, contributed over £5000 having spent the summer selling sweet treats from a cart on the coast to coast Devoran - Portreath cycle trail. Izzy's amazing cake sales have also continued in school this term, adding hundreds more to her personal fundraising total!
Last year's team raised a staggering £37,735 and the 2020 team seem to see this as a challenge they are prepared to take! The L4U 2020 current total is over £14,000 already!
Watch out for upcoming Lander4Uganda fundraising projects - RLS Santa Run and the L4U Jumblebee Online Auction, more supermarket bag packs...
Where will the money go?
In July 2020, we will travel to Uganda. Every year we assess the best way to distribute our funds when we arrive in Uganda; we choose carefully and, as you can see from the report on last year's spending below, we choose well.
With the funds raised in 2018/19, students:
Completed major renovations to Nazarene School, Kamuzinda, extended, rendered and painted Lion girls dormitory bright pink, paid to have the outdoor play equipment repaired and painted, painted primary classrooms, built toilets and kitchens on teachers’ accommodation, built a toilet block for White Angel boys dormitory and began the building work for the new school hall which they have chosen to name ‘Lander Hall’.
At Luweero school the team paid for improvements to the ongoing building of the school hall and taught lessons for the morning. The team also distributed food parcels to the elderly, sick and poor, delivered re-useable sanitary products to the girls and hosted ‘bra drops’.
At Bunjakko School; L4U2019 completed the boys dormitory that was started last year, built a new toilet and shower block for the girls dormitory, started the excavation for a football pitch, painted classrooms, destroyed termite mounds and rendered the staff room. They also hosted a talent competition and a sports day, provided a feast for 2 schools, donated tools, taught lessons and provided toothbrushes to hundreds of primary school students.
The L4U 2019 team also delivered over a ton of donated books, clothing, stationery, sports equipment, medical supplies, bras, shoes, laptops, sanitary items and much more! This was divided between the 3000+ Ugandans that we support.
By supporting Lander4Uganda 2020, you are not funding staff or student tickets as students that need help to pay for their tickets do so entirely separately.
We are always grateful for donations and fundraising ideas. Please contact us if you can help.
