Year 7 Rugby Team Takes County Champions Title

Added 8 years ago

Following on from winning the West Cornwall U12 Rugby Festival last month, our Year 7 team went head to head with the winners of the East Cornwall festival, Newquay Tretherras, in the Cornwall Play Off Final at Redruth School on Wednesday night. After a tense opening few minutes where Newquay dominated the territory and possession, a loose pass was pounced on by Owen Watts who sped the length of the pitch to score, with Sam Gapp adding the conversion. A further fantastic finish by Owen  and conversion by Sam stretched the Lander lead before Newquay came back in the closing minutes of the half. The Lander defence was superb but eventually Newquay squeezed over in the corner to make the score 14-7 at half time. After half time, Lander settled their nerves from the first half and began playing some excellent flowing rugby with Sam Gapp particularly catching the eye with some great running from full back. Frank Holmes broke the deadlock after the break, showing excellent pace and footwork to score a fine try. Lander dominated large parts of the second half and were superb in defence and at the ruck to turn over possession when Newquay had the ball. Two further tries by Harry Lampier and Cameron Richards, and both converted by Sam, meant the score finished 33-7 and Lander were crowned worthy winners of a pulsating final, in which Newquay certainly played their part!

County Champions in their first term at Richard Lander certainly bodes well for the future and we look forward to seeing the players and team develop over the next five years.
