Dear Parent/Carer,

We are delighted to announce that Richard Lander School has once again been successful in our Turing Scheme bid! We have been awarded funds sufficient to provide 16 fully funded student places on our Lander4Uganda 2027 trip.

If your child’s application is successful, we will cover the entire cost of the trip in July 2027 (currently £2,850 for paying students). In addition, upon provision of receipts, we will assist families with the costs of:

  • Passport applications (where necessary)
  • Yellow Fever vaccinations
  • Malarone (malaria prevention)

About the Trip

This trip is Richard Lander School’s flagship international visit. Since 2010, our school community has worked hard to raise funds for development projects at our partner schools in Uganda. For Lander4Uganda students, this fundraising culminates in the African adventure of a lifetime. For around three weeks, students work directly in our partner schools before exploring the cultural sites and markets of Kampala and finishing with a three-day safari.

Starting in Year 10, students become part of a team—fundraising through sleepovers, donut sales, and sponsored events. Then, in July, we travel to Uganda to learn building trades, teach lessons, make lifelong friends with our Ugandan peers, play games, craft, sing, dance, visit a chimpanzee sanctuary, and learn about Ugandan history. After all the hard work, students enjoy an epic wildlife experience at a Ugandan safari park.

It is a truly unique way to experience a country and culture alongside a supportive team of Richard Lander School staff and students—and an opportunity to make a real difference!

Important Details & Eligibility

  • Dates: The 2027 Uganda trip is scheduled to take place from Tuesday 6th July – Tuesday 3rd August 2027.
  • Who can apply: We invite applications from current Year 10 students for the 16 Turing-funded places.
  • Already reserved a spot? You can still apply for funding! If your child is awarded a place, any funds paid to date will be fully reimbursed.

Selection Criteria

  1. Funding Eligibility (Disadvantage Criteria) Funding priorities are based on supporting students from disadvantaged backgrounds. For the purposes of this scheme, disadvantage is defined as one of more of:
  • An annual household income of £25,000 or less
  • Entitlement to Pupil Premium funding
  • Experience of being in care or being a care leaver (at any stage of life)
  • Status as a refugee or asylum seeker
  • Receiving Universal Credit or other income-related benefits (or living with someone who does)

Note: This list is not exhaustive. If a student does not precisely meet these criteria but experiences similar circumstances justifying extra support (such as unaffordable housing costs), we can include them in our allocation.

  1. Student Motivation Students will also be evaluated on their commitment to this trip and their participation in past or future charitable initiatives. Selection will be based on a written application and an interview.

Support is available: Tutors, previous Lander4Uganda students and staff, Pastoral Support, and the RLS SEND team are available to assist students with their written applications. Mrs Griffiths and Miss Wright will conduct the interviews.

Interested students and parents/carers are invited to complete an application form. A paper copy is attached to this email, and an online version can be accessed here: https://forms.cloud.microsoft/e/EEvVaBDgGL
