Sports

Our PE Department prides itself on providing a huge range of extra-curricular activities for all ages and ability groups.

Through being part of a County Cup winning football teams, competing nationally in Gymnastics, being part of Girls Active or by enjoying a lunchtime session of volleyball, our aim is for every child to enjoy being active. Our extra-curricular offer is published at the start of each term. Other specialist team events such as equestrian competitions and annual events such as the Cornwall Partnership Surf Competition are advertised in PE lessons and on Moodle.

Many students choose to join a school team and take part in lunchtime or after school training sessions, which may lead to competitive fixtures. In the Autumn and Spring terms, school teams which train regularly and take part in league and cup fixtures include boys and girls football and rugby teams, boys basketball, girls netball and girls, boys and mixed hockey teams.

In the Summer term the focus shifts to athletics, cricket, rounders and tennis with opportunities for our most talented students to compete in CSAA and ESAA competitions, Cornwall School Games and, of course, our own sports day.

We also enter teams in annual competitions and one-off tournaments in many other sports; including badminton and table tennis.

Extra-curricular sports clubs take place every day at lunchtime and tutor time and after school Monday – Thursday. Fixtures often take place after school.

Of course, some students take part in extra-curricular activities for fitness, friendship and fun but are not interested in competing and they are welcomed equally. All students of the appropriate year group(s) are very welcome at our lunchtime and tutor time sessions, regardless of ability.

Learning Community Sports

Learning Community Sports competitions take place across the whole academic year culminating in Sports Day at the end of the summer term.

In the Autumn and Spring terms, students from Godrevy, Pentire, Rame and Towan form teams and compete in hockey, rugby, football and netball leagues. In previous years, cross country and swimming gala results have also contributed to deciding which community will win the Learning Community Sports Cup.

Sports Day

The highlight of our Learning Community Sports year is Sports Day which takes place in the Summer term. This whole school event, sees Godrevy, Pentire, Rame and Towan go head to head to try to win the Sports Day and Learning Community Sports cups.

Sports day is an opportunity for our top athletes to excel and attempt to break school records. Learning communities put forward 2 competitors in each year group for 12 events: Track: 100m, 200m, 300m, 800m, 1500 and 4x100m. Field; long jump, triple jump, high jump, shot, discus, javelin.

There are also recreational sports events available to all, with football and volleyball proving particularly popular, and a charity refreshment stand.

Sports Day is a team event and supporters line up trackside, painted in community colours to cheer their learning communities on. There is always a friendly, competitive atmosphere with noticeable team spirit. There are also stand out individual performances, and with records for all events being kept since Richard Lander School moved to the current site in 2007, there is always the challenge to break these records.

After all the results have been collated, there is a presentation at the end of the day.

Sports Presentation Evening

Sports Presentation Evening takes place at the end of the summer term and is our celebration of students who contribute to extra-curricular sport and who excel in individual sports. Our Head of PE provides a round up of the year’s sporting achievements and awards are given out to teams and individuals. The ultimate award is ‘Sportsman of the Year’ and ‘Sportswoman of the Year.’

Sports Leaders and Girls Active

Girls Active students are recruited from year 9. They attend Girls Active club meetings with Miss Martin, where they plan sessions for younger students to enjoy and participate in. They also develop the skills needed to run team activities. They then run regular activities for our primary partner schools. They are dedicated, enthusiastic and very energetic.

Sports Leaders are recruited from Year 10 boys and girls. They choose to do this within their core PE lessons and do not need to have taken sports studies as an option to take part in this course.
